Launching a speech therapy department in the orthodontics department of the dental school

According to the public relations of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, School of Dentistry, the unveiling ceremony of advanced treatment facilities for cleft lip and palate patients was attended by Dr. Mohammad Bayat, Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Farnoush Mohammadi, Vice Chancellor for Graduate and Specialized Education, Dr. Elhiar Gerami, Head of Orthodontics and Dr. Sarvin Sarmadi, faculty member of the orthodontics department of the School of Dentistry, Dr. Ahmad Reza Khatunabadi, Vice Chancellor for Research, Dr. Gholam Reza Aliaei, Vice Chancellor for Education, and Dr. Seyedeh Maryam Khodami, Director of the Speech Therapy Department of the School of Rehabilitation were held on June 21, 2021 in the council hall.

 

At the beginning, Dr. Bayat, while expressing his happiness for the results of the team's unremitting efforts, said: By launching a speech therapy room in the orthodontics department of the School of Dentistry in cooperation with the Speech Therapy Department of the School of Rehabilitation, extensive and appropriate services for patients with cleft lip and palate presented. He pointed out that various measures have been taken in this field, such as the registry plan of these patients, training them, preparing educational videos, preparing the necessary standards and protocols, and setting up a cleft lip and palate clinic in the orthodontic department. The construction of a nasometer and an acoustic room will begin and improve services for patients with cleft palate. Dr. Bayat stated: Webinars have been held in this field and we are trying to expand the relationship with organizations that have these services in the future and invite them to exchange scientific achievements. Dr. Aliaei added: "According to the registry discussion that has been done, we hope that these services will be broader and more comprehensive with interdisciplinary communication between the two faculties and publish articles and books in this field so that patients can Benefit from these valuable services. Then, Dr. Khodami, pointing out that one of the common problems in the population with cleft lip and palate is swallowing disorders, speech and language, from the beginning, the need for a speech therapist in the cleft lip and palate team was strongly felt; Thus, the cooperation between the School of Rehabilitation and Dentistry was established. Fortunately, today, after four years of cooperation between the two faculties, we have achieved acceptable results in this field. He further pointed out the numerous problems of these patients and the impact of these problems on their quality of life, emphasizing that the main and ultimate goal of all specialists of the cleft lip and palate team is to provide effective, scientific and up-to-date clinical services to improve the quality of life of these patients. . Dr. Khatunabadi continued by stating that: The research that is done should be community-based, otherwise it will not be valuable, adding: I hope that the articles that are extracted can help improve the services of patients with cleft lip and palate. At the end, the faculty members of the School of Rehabilitation visited the advanced treatment facilities for patients with cleft lip and palate, nasometer and acoustic room.
